页码18–19 螺旋星云NGC7293。这个天体是距离太阳最近的行星状星云。不同色彩自然分层并示踪了来自中心恒星喷射的不同电离度的物质壳层。氧原子被激发(或者说被加热)使中心区域显现出蓝色,而外侧红色区域是氢和氮主导的区域。红色壳层内最小的径向液滴状结构尺度也有150个天文单位(即150倍日地距离)。人们特别为这种漂亮的结构命名,称之为“向日葵星云”。
页码50–51 M42,即猎户座大星云。2000年11月,一名天文爱好者在美国约书亚树村(Joshua Tree national park)拍摄到了这张杰出的照片。
页码64–65 老鼠星系(亦即NGC4676)。位于后发星系团,距离我们300光年。这是一对正在相互作用的星系,它拖出了一条用恒星气体组成的长尾巴,看上去像一只老鼠,因此被称为老鼠星系。最终它们将并合到一起成为一个星系。
